Today, Samsung revealed a new TV tailor-made for young people: Meet the Sero, a 43-inch QLED TV that flips around 90 degrees from landscape to portrait mode. If you’re wondering why this thing exists, consider that 70 percent of millennials don’t bother turning their smartphones horizontally to watch videos, according to marketing research.
The Sero takes our rampant love for vertical to its next logical step.
Samsung studied the mobile viewing habits of millennials and set out to create a TV that serves them. The Korean tech giant “will continue introducing screens that respect personal consumer tastes,” says Han Jong-hee, the president of the company’s video display business, in an interview with the Korea Herald. “We will think outside the box to bring different types of screens and different user experiences.”
Up first is the Sero, which acts just like your typical TV when in horizontal mode. But flip it over to vertical mode and you can mirror your phone via near-field communication (NFC) to watch mobile videos from apps like Instagram and Snapchat exactly how they’re supposed to be seen, only blown up for the big screen. As for the other specs, you’ll be able to scroll through your stories and hear more than you ever wanted to hear with the TV’s 4.1-channel, 60-watt speaker.
For now, the Sero will only be available in Korea for 18.9 million won, or $1,600. No word yet from Samsung as to whether or not the TV will hit electronics stores stateside, so we might be waiting a while to watch 10-second concert clips and quick cooking instructions in all their 43-inch glory.
